In Search of Yvy Marane’y in an experimental documentary film that explores the way I relate to Guaraní — one of the Indigenous languages of Paraguay, where I am from. The film explores the intersection of an ancestral language and the texting app WhatsApp, which is widely used by Latin Americans to communicate with our families back home, and where I fit in this dynamic as an immigrant trying to learn my Indigenous language at a distance. Commissioned by the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective in 2020.
Jamilah, a gourmet stuck working in a cubicle hellscape, and Luis, a former doctor and recent immigrant who sells “hold music”, fall in love under unlikely circumstances that involve absolutely terrible music, a lot of blood, and edible flowers. Produced and funded by the BlackStar Film Festival Philadelphia Filmmaker Lab, 2022.
After committing a murder, an indigenous woman and her husband, a veteran of the Iraq War, flee Los Angeles for Mexico, only to confront new dangers awaiting them at and beyond the border. This short film was created through funding from the Sundance Institute and The Knight Foundation, 2019.
